Coffee arrived in Hawai‘i in 1817 by Don Francisco de Paula Marin a Spanish physician with a love for all things botanical! He was hoping to bring the crop to Hawai‘i to plant on the island of Oahu, however the plants failed to flourish. Boki, the governor of Oahu at the time was inspired by Don and hired farmer, John Wilkinson, to help him cultivate the coffee plant. They picked up coffee plants in Brazil and successfully grew coffee in Oahu’s Mānoa Valley. From these plants, Samuel Ruggles planted the first coffee tree in Kona, Hawai‘i. The coffee flourished in Kona due to its rich volcanic soil.
